The world's largest school by number of pupils has a record enrolment of more than 37,000 pupils. The school was founded in 1959 by Dr Jagdish Gandhi, a socially motivated Gandhian, along with his wife Dr (Mrs) Bharti Gandhi, M.Ed., a child psychologist. The pair launched their first campus on a borrowed capital of 300 rupees, housed it in rented premises and began with only five students. The school admitted boys and girls between the ages of 2 and 5, who could then follow through their education to Degree Level. It is the only school honored with the UNESCO Prize for Peace Education (2002), and the only one to organize and host 29 International Events for children each year.
The school's inspirational motto is ‘Jai Jagat’ followed
by one and all.
